Can someone explain the lyrics:

You and me burning matches / Lifting latches

and

Two of us wearing raincoats / Standing so low (solo?) in the sun

Thanks.

I remembered this conversation on the forum.

latch-lifter.JPGImage Enlarger

Latch-lifter n. [Scouse (Liverpool) argot] 1. The price of admission, leading to the possibility of free rounds. 2. The HACKER effort expended to gain initial access to a site

=>The Stoic ethics of Merseyside pub crawling demands that you pay for your first bevvy (drink), figuratively “lifting the latch” and gaining a valued place at the bar as a bona-fide customer. Thereafter, endless ploys are available to sponge from friend and stranger. Thus, you may challenge all upstanding (if any) to name the last man to box Gentleman Jim (the undertaker); seek the dead center of town (Anfield Cemetery); or ask who played for both Liverpool and Everton at the same derby soccer match (the Royal Marines Band). Additionally, there are many bets you can place on factual (name the referee and linesmen at the 1913 FA Cup Final) or Smullyan-type (is A telling the truth about what B is saying about Pascal?) trivia.

Hummmm, the undertaker drew a heavy sigh seeing no one else had come.

As far as the second part of your question, I always think of it as SOLO in the sun. The Beatles are at the end and Paul and John are now going solo. I don’t know about the raincoat part. If I discover anything (“I think of everything to be discovered”), I’ll add it to the thread.

Seem to recall something about McCartney writing this song with Linda in mind.

But in light of the lyrics… not sure how that can be.

Probably bit of both Linda and John…….As I’m sure you’re thinking Paul would definitely not write……’You and I have memories longer that the road that stretches out ahead’ to his new wife!

Whatever the song is about, it always puts me in a mood to just go for drive.

In the Wingspan DVD (made by Paul), at the 8:40 mark, he say’s it was Linda that gave him the inspiration for the song, when they just took off and went for a car ride.

Yeah. Paul and Linda would just jump in the car and drive to get lost and away from everything. Part of the song is obviously referring to Paul’s friendship with John, the other is his travels and adventures with Linda.

I don’t think I ever quite appreciated how raw this recording is until last night, I listened to it (multiple times) on headphones. You can hear somebody bumping into his mike a couple times.

Normally I am fond of audiophilic overproduction, but this song sounds really fab.

@William Shears Campbell I have it on good authority that ‘mike’ is a correct and accepted short form of ‘microphone’.

Both are correct, I think. Scrabble takes “mike” as a word.

For me, Paul’s voice on Two Of Us and When I’m Sixty-Four  sounds quite different to the voice he usually has in other songs. It got quite obvious as he spoke at the end of Two Of Us , where his voice sounds “normal” again. Am I only imagining it or is this a special recording method or a certain way of singing?

If anyone knows, I would be glad!

Not once does the diversity seem forced -- the genius of the record is how the vaudevillian "When I'm 64" seems like a logical extension of "Within You Without You" and how it provides a gateway to the chiming guitars of "Lovely Rita. - Stephen T. Erlewine on Sgt Pepper's

I’ve always thought his voice sounded strange on Two Of Us as well. It sounds like he had a head cold at the time.
As for the reason, the song was recorded live at Apple Studios. That might be why his voice sounds strange.

For When I’m Sixty-Four , Paul had his voice sped up so he would sound like his teenage self.

Ah, Thank you, it makes sense now. I didn’t know that bit about being recorded live.

I just love that it is cleverer than any official Apple merchandise.

If Apple was this intelligent about how they sold The Beatles, @meanmistermustard and I would have much less to complain about.
